Create an Attractive Resume Employers Will Notice
Create an Attractive Resume Employers Will NoticeCreate an Attractive Resume Employers Will NoticeCreate an Attractive Resume Employers Will NoticeThere are rules for resume writing that are pretty standard and widely accepted by professional resume writers and hiring managers. But what about resume format and style? Can employers really be so picky about appearance that they ignore how well-written and on target your experience and qualifications are?Sure they can. But it should come as no surprise that style is a personal preference. While one employer may love your layout, the next may hate it. So what can you do about that?Honestly, elend much. But what you can do is make koranvers youve nailed the most basic style choices that will appeal to the widest possible range of hiring managers. You can put your own spin on colors and graphics, but components like font, margins, and indents should remain as basic as possible.FONTTypeface The cleanest, clearest, and most popular font choi ces today are those without feet, also known as sans-serif. Some examples of sans-serif typefaces are Verdana, Arial, Trebuchet, and Tahoma. On the other hand, very traditional employers might prefer a serif font such as Times New Roman, which resembles newspaper type.Size You have some flexibility here, but keep in mind that resume text should not fall below 9pts or exceed 12pts. For most fonts, its better to stick with 10 or 11pts. Category headingscan be a few points larger than the body text so theyre easy to locate at a glance.Style Use bold or italics to make certain parts of your resume stand out. You might choose to italicize job titles or use bold or UPPERCASE lettering for category headings. But whatever you do, make sure youre consistentif you italicize one job title, make sure to italicize them all Also pay attention to punctuation (such as comma usage) and line spacing.MARGINSCombined with font size and style, margins contribute to the amount of white space on your resum e, which is an important element for readability. Keep the margins between .5 and 1, making sure to set all four at the same size for consistency. Adjusting margins is also a great way to eliminate the problem of an unnecessary second page with just a line or two on it.INDENTSIndenting can be tricky if youre not familiar with tab settings. The most important thing to remember is to keep all indents aligned vertically down the page. If you indent your bullet lists, make sure all bullet lists have the same indent. In the end, make all your layout and style choices in a way thatlets the content of your resume stand out. Dont try to hide a poorly written resume under fancy text and over-the-top graphics, because hiring managers will notice. But on the other hand, dont be afraid to use a dash ofcolorto make your resume stand outjust keep it clean and readable.

This odd technique may finally get rid of your horrible winter cold
This odd technique may finally get rid of your horrible winter coldThis odd technique may finally get rid of your horrible winter coldIf youre anything like me then once October hits having a cold pretty much becomes your status quo. If there is a cold out there, I catch it and it settles right in and doesnt go anywhere for a long time. Now I try to do all the stuff you are supposed to do, but I am also not a perfect human being and cant sit at work all day with a blanket wrapped around me, drinking tea and orange juice in rotations. If I really wanted to avoid a cold I would have to avoid work altogether as well as public transportation as both of these places are filled with germs. And this winter has been especially bad as even when I finally got rid of one cold (thank you antibiotics) my cold vokalzusammensto welches very short lived as I got one the next week.I am so desperate for a cure I have almost taken my sisters advice of ingesting some sort of elderberry concoction (Im pre tty sure thats what all the evil witches gave princesses in fairy tales, but at this point, I am open to it.)However new research shows that something else may help to remedy my sad plight. There are actually multiple studies that show that simply listening to music can help you beat your cold. A 2008 study found that when300 participants listened to either 50 minutes of upbeat dance music versus a control group that just heard a random collection of tones, the former saw an increase in the antibody immunoglobulin A, which is very important for your immune system.Music fends off infectionA study out of Japan found that the subjects, who participated in bimonthly group sessions that had them listening to music, lowered their systolic blood pressure by an average of five to six points after three months of doing this. Highblood pressure can lead to many problems including heart disease. In a review of 400 studies, published in 2013 by McGill University, in Canada, it was found that mus ic helped raise levels of killer cells or white blood cells that help to destroy infected or cancerous cells. So, in other words, turn on some music if you have had a cold for over a week.H/t toBustle.

Extreme Team Building
Extreme Team Building Extreme Team Building Extreme Team Building Team skydiving, rock climbing, white water rafting, and bungee jumping are all suitable activities for adrenaline-loving thrill seekers, but what role do they play in corporate America? All are extreme team recreational exercises that some executives believe help to boost employee morale and foster a spirit cooperation and creativity amongst team members. Most team-building activities focus on developing critical skills, like problem-solving, real -time decision-making, task delegation, and communication. Some are mental exercises and some just arent for the faint of heart. Take Vallarta Adventures, which offers an Adventure Team Building Program designed to facilitate the development of more creative and productive employees, effective managers, and efficient teams. Their outdoor skills program sends participants through mountains, mesas and canyons with few basic supplies - no tents, sleeping bags, stoves, backpacks, watches, radios, or cell phones. The outdoor adventure program is just as challenging, as participants are engaged in a high-speed boat ride, hiking, rappelling, zip lining, mule riding, and traversing jungle bridges. Many corporate executives believe that extreme team building exercises help to boost employee morale and foster cooperation. Management consulting firm, Teambuilding Inc., organizes a high-tech treasure hunt, called Geoquest, where team members must work together to find hidden targets. Teams of four to five people receive handheld GPS units pre-programmed with the locations of hidden treasures. The GPS units guide teams to within 20 feet of their goal. After that, they use their wits and determination to decipher written clues to find the hidden answers. In their sailing team building exercise, participants battle the wind, currents, and their colleagues while guiding their sail boats through an obstacle course. Success requires extensive collaboration between boats using hand-held radios as communications skills. For the more adventurous, extreme team building exercises are designed to build team spirit or put decision-making skills into practice by placing participants into physically demanding situations. While treasure hunts, hiking, and sailing are relatively safe, team skydiving seems to move closer to the danger zone. Rock climbing, another demanding extreme sport, presents its own challenges and risks, yet some incorporate the activity into their team building program. Sound like fun teambuilding exercises? Not to everyone. Anne Thornley-Brown, president of Executive Oasis International, a Toronto-based management consulting firm specializing in team building retreats and facilitated business simulations, cautions that dangerous activities are being passed off as team building. Adrenaline junkies in some executive suites combined with an anything a group does together is team building mentality is a slippery, dangerous, and, at times very expensive slope, writes Thornley-Brown in her corporate team building blog. Team building can include recreational activities but a recreational activity is not the same thing as team building. Just because a group gets together and engages in an activity that is fun, does not make the activity team building, she says. Business team building is about bringing the team together and using their collective genius to achieve results. Expertly facilitated team building can help business organizations generate specific and measurable business results. Thornley-Brown adds: Is there a place for strictly recreational activities in the corporate world? Absolutely. Companies would be dreary places to work if no one ever laughed or smiled. There is a place for company picnics, Christmas parties, and recreational outings... even paintball if it floats your boat. The key is that, unless your business is a country club or a recreation center, the budget for recreation should never exceed or be close to what is spent on real team building to help the organization achieve its mission and purpose. Tom Ricci is the owner of Ricci Communications. Team building can include recreational activities but a recreational activity is not the same thing as team building.Anne Thornley-Brown, president, Executive Oasis International

Negotiating Salary and Benefits 5 Questions Women Should Ask
Negotiating Salary and Benefits 5 Questions Women Should Ask Negotiating Salary and Benefits 5 Questions Women Should Ask Negotiating Salary and Benefits 5 Questions Women Should Ask PinDo you get the salary you deserve? I have always been paid more or at least the same as my male colleagues. I am very good at negotiating my own salary. I even teach women how to get paid for what they do. And Iâm here to ask you five questions to get you thinking about salary and benefits in a way that makes you feel confident and prepared to discuss these topics when job searching. 5 Questions To Ask Yourself About Salary and Benefits 1. What is your vision? If you do not have a vision, you will not know where you are going or what resources you will need to get there: money, people, energy, etc. Money is a resource like anything else. Think about your vision for yourself and your life. The next questions will help you. 2. How much are you worth? All companies calculate their value. They need to know how much they are worth in case they are required to take out a loan or sell the company. Have you calculated your value? Have you considered how much you are worth in terms of yearly salary? I have noticed that some women have difficulty putting a price tag on themselves. Many do not seek to become wealthy, as if earning money- a lot of money- is not appropriate for women, even though we are living in the year 2017. Try to write down how much you are worth in yearly salary, including pension. If you want to be a successful businessperson, you should show an interest in the financial game, and you should learn how to prioritize economy and investments. Most importantly, you should realize how much you are worth. If you do not understand economics, I recommend that you attend some basic courses to learn how to read annual accounts, and create and understand investments. 3. Can you prioritize your values? You can work with a prioritization of your life values so that pricing yourself will become easier. Your valuation of yourself is often influenced by what other people think of you- whether they see you as a success or a failure, a winner or a loser, strong or weak. The good news is that you can easily stamp out this influence. The prerequisite is that you should be willing to step into character, cultivate your authentic self, and not allow others to influence your self-image negatively. 4. Have you thought about what financial freedom means to you? About 20 years ago, I seriously thought about what I wanted to achieve in my life. Old friends say that I have always known what I wanted. However, that was not exactly my experience, but apparently, my attitude has always been like that. In the beginning, my goal was to earn money and get everything that I did not have as a child. I was also very focused on earning money and becoming financially independent. Toward the end of the 1990s, I made a so-called âf-you accountâ (I am sorry about the name; I was very young back then). In that bank account, I saved my money, rather than spending it partying or buying clothes, to ensure my independence and freedom. While my friends bought lipsticks, I bought books. While they were partying, I was working. While they were hungover, I studied on weekends. They have fantastic lives today, but at the same time, some are frustrated and feel left out in a society dominated by men. But nobody is leaving them out. The point is, the sooner you think about what financial freedom means to you- why you need or want to make money- the sooner youll reach the goals and lifestyle you seek. 5. What are your risks and rewards? When you decide which salary is right for you to maintain a good balance in your life, you need to consider a few different risk profiles and possible rewards. Salary is only one part of being rich. You should be aware of your risk profile because it says something about what you can win and what you are willing to invest/when you ask for more money. The greater the risk, the greater the expected return. Is your level of risk tolerance high, medium, or low? Are you the type of person who takes chances, or are you the type who is more hesitant and take your time to weigh your options? When you need to assess a new job or a new opportunity, you should write down what you stand to gain if you seize the opportunity. Possible Rewards: Money Freedom Status Flexibility/time Challenges More skilled colleagues Happiness Possible Losses: Loss of time with the family Loss of happiness Health-related consequences Loss of freedom Loss of flexibility Loss of status What do you perceive as a reward? What is a loss? It is highly individual, and you should have a clear idea about the loss/win rating of all situations and new opportunities. By answering these questions, seriously and thoughtfully, you will no longer blame other people when something does not live up to your expectations. Instead, you will feel in control of your financial freedom, and better able to advocate for yourself when it comes to salary and benefits negotiation. Looking for a higher salary? Single women are downplaying their career goals around men, study finds
Single women are downplaying their career goals around men, study finds Single women are downplaying their career goals around men, study finds A recent study from the National Bureau of Economic Research starts with an intriguing question: âDo single women avoid career-enhancing actions because these actions could signal personality traits, like ambition, that are undesirable in the marriage market?âThe research focused on students at what was referred to as an âelite U.S. MBA programâ and told participants they were filling out a job preference and personality test. Questions included salary requirements and elements of job flexibility.Playing down ambition, asking for lessHereâs the surprise: the study found that single women tended to downplay their career goals and demands when they know those answers will be shared with men - even asking for less money.Interestingly, their female peers who have partners donât downplay their ambitions, according to the studyâs findings. The women in the study were given two situations: in one case, researchers told the women their answers would be shared with peers, and i n another case the researchers told the women that their answers would remain private. When single female participants who were told their answers would be shared with their peers, they tended to ask for an average salary that was $18,000 less per year, requested to work four fewer hours per week and asked for seven fewer days of travel per month than women with partners. In contrast, when single women thought their answers wouldnât be shared with peers, they gave responses that were similar to women with partners. Moreover, the study found that men and women with partners did not alter their answers based on whether or not others were going to see it.In addition, a survey sent by researchers after the experiment showed that three-quarters of single female respondents reported that they didnât participate in career initiatives that would help them professionally out of fear of seeming too ambitious; they also generally had lower participation grades than their counterparts with par tners.Women may believe men look for less ambitious partners Why would women not in relationships want to appear less ambitious?Researchers hypothesized it had something to do with other academic work that suggests that men typically prefer women with fewer career aspirations, therefore leading women to alter behaviors to appear more romantically desirable. However, Sallie Krawcheck, founder of the Ellevate Network and the womenâs investment platform Ellevest, believes single women also act accordingly due to ideas about appealing to others more generally.âThese are the messages society sends us, that women are expected to act a certain way that does not include being too aggressive in the workplace and elsewhere,â she says.âIf you donât have a seat at the table, youâre on the menu,â says Aditi Juneja, co-creator of the Resistance Manual, which has configured data specifically looking at the gender wage gap in all 50 U.S. states as well as nationally.

How to Beat the Competition to Unlisted Jobs
How to Beat the Competition to Unlisted Jobs How to Beat the Competition to Unlisted Jobs Get a jump on other job seekers - and HR - by knowing the type of people who hear of positions before theyâre ever advertised.I always draw a clear distinction between the front and back doors of career transition.Consider this: Every single person reading this article has either gotten a job through someone they know or knows someone who has. Yet too often that incident is treated like a neat little coincidence or synchronicity, not recognized as a lesson about how an effective career transition really takes place.Matter of fact, a participant in a recent workshop confessed that every job in his life came through connections, so he always figured he just didnât know how to find a job. Think of that! Heâs been doing it right all along, but he still felt guilty that he wasnât doing the same-olâ-same-olâ front-door stuff like everyone else: looking for open, advertised positions and applying as one of the lemming hoards. To understand why 80 percent of all jobs are filled before they are ever advertised - and why the back door is better than the front door - letâs look at a job openingâs life cycle. Letâs consider a hypothetical department in a hypothetical companyâ¦Phase 1: A position is going to open up, and only a handful of people know. There is no position open, but, by the miracle of creation, a position will open up soon. Letâs say Clarice is moving to Lima, Ohio, or Joe isnât cutting it; the boss wants to get rid of Joe, but not before sheâs found a replacement. At this point, there are people who know that an opening is coming. Weâll call them the âpeople in the know.â What are they doing with what they know? Telling their family, friends and acquaintances, of course. Why? Because if there is a desk open beside you, wouldnât you rather fill it with someone you know than run the risk of HR putting in some sniveling weirdo? Of course you would. Itâs in your own best interest. But, as Joe or Jane Jobseeker walking up to t he company today, youâll get routed to HR - the first stop for unknowns - and will be told that the company doesnât have a job⦠because HR doesnât know about it yet.Yet, all the while, the âpeople in the knowâ are talking to others they know. Folks are moseying in and having casual conversations with the boss ⦠and getting jobs.Phase 2: The department gets wind that a job is opening up.In this phase, it is general and open knowledge in the department that a position will be opening and there is movement toward getting a job requisition over to HR. But how long does that take? In some organizations, it can take weeks or months. Yet, as Joe and Jane Jobseeker approach the company, HR again informs them that there are no jobs - because the position is still not official or known. (Joe and Jane may feel free, however, to input themselves into the companyâs huge database for future reference.)Whatâs happening back over at the department? The âpeople in the knowâ are still talking to friends, relatives and acquaintances, and folks are still coming in, having casual conversations and getting jobs. âOh, youâre Judyâs friend! Grab a cup of coffee, sit down, letâs talk.â Eighty percent of all jobs are filled by the end of this phase.Phase 3: HR finally receives the job opening from the business unit. Now HR has been officially informed, and theyâve put out the word in the publicized job market. They are inundated. Ten thousand resumes for one position. Now Joe or Jane Jobseeker coming through the front door has a competitive stance of zilch ⦠and their negotiating position is no better. If you donât like what the companyâs offering, there are 9, 999 people right behind you who do.At this point, you no longer enjoy the casual back-door interviews you would have had by being known by someone âin the knowâ in the earlier phases. No, now you have adversarial interviews with HR. God love HR, but theyâve got a tough job - they have to whittle 10,000 resumes down to one. So they are going to look for why youâre notright for the job rather than why you are.Lastly, one final nail in the coffin of the front-door method: If you think about it, a lot of people knew about that job before it was advertised. How come itâs still open? Maybe itâs not a plum position. To summar ize, front-door knocks get you: Competition from everyone and no negotiating stance Adversarial interviews Probably not a plum position (remember, lots of others knew about it already) While back-door moseying gets you: Casual conversations No noticeable competition The leg up of personal referral Therefore, my question is: Why would you ever focus on the front door in your career-transition efforts? Itâs just not a wise use of your time. Sure, maybe keep your eyes peeled in case some fluke comes through the front door that may be worth an inquiry. But Iâd rather see you use an advertised position as a guide post to creating back-door connections rather than believe that those avenues will actually net you a job.Think about it: If that company has that position, donât you think its competitors have similar positions? Use ads simply as road maps to locate who you should be getting to know through research of interests and industry issues. (An ounce of research is worth a pound of job search.)Get to know those people before a position may necessarily be open. That leaves you as someone the âpeople in the knowâ know when openings inevitably arise.

The Divide Between Ordinary and Extraordinary
The Divide Between Ordinary and Extraordinary The Divide Between Ordinary and Extraordinary How do you think beyond the paycheck when youâre on the job hunt? The objective of a successful job search is not to get a job. The objective is to fulfill your purpose.Iâm 47 now and 25 years into my career. Iâve had the opportunity to watch many people start their careers and talk with many others who have ended their careers. Through this informal research it has become clear to me that there are two distinctly different sets of career DNA in operation.A Tale of Two CareersThe first type of career search is based on the question: âWhere can I make money quickly?â The guidance: Get a good job, one that pays well and has a bright future to it. Go to a place where you can stay for a long time, get good benefits and a solid salary. Donât rock the boat too much, keep the boss happy, and you will gain the admiration of many people. You will have the precious commodity known as security. In the classic tale of the tortoise and the hare, this first type of employee is the hare. He sprints out ahead of everyone else. This person isnât particularly thrilled with the work but relishes the fact that he has secured a âgreat job.â The money is better than what his peers are making, and the future seems bright. Then something odd happens. The person finds that not being fulfilled with any sense of purpose at work really is a heavy price to pay. The money no longer seems to be as great as it once did. However, the person rationalizes that itâs too late to go after something that would really excite him and decides to stay with the job. The person has built up an enjoyable lifestyle and certainly doesnât want to risk losing it. If not exactly golden handcuffs, the job has at least become silver strings that keep him tied down from ever going after what he really wants to do.The second type of career search is based on a simple question: âWhat do I want to do and why do I want to do it?â That can be a difficult question because the answer may not fit wi th any job openings available at the moment. As a result, this person struggles at the beginning of the race. She may take a job just to get some food on the table but knows that there is no real future in that job. Peers laugh at this unfortunate soul because she seems to have no direction. The clock is ticking, and she isnât making any real progress toward financial or title success. This person is the tortoise. People may write her off as not being a real player in the job market. They assume she will move along very slowly and never really stand out as anything special. Then suddenly, a door opens: An opportunity to fulfill her purpose is standing right there, and the person jumps at this chance. Unexpectedly, the person who had been written off long ago emerges as a star employee. People canât believe what is happening. This is very hard for them to accept. The tortoise has somehow managed to create a far more meaningful and successful career than they have. How to find your p urposeThe idea of âpurposeâ has been in the air a great deal lately. From Rick Warrenâs massive best-selling book, âThe Purpose-Driven Life,â to Dan Pinkâs bestseller, âDrive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us,â the idea of having a clearly defined purpose has been the subject of many, many books in this century. However, my favorite quote on having a purpose at work dates back to 1943 in a book by Ayn Rand called âThe Fountainhead.â Howard Roark, a young architect who is just starting his career, is in a conversation with the famous architect Henry Cameron, who is just about to end his career. Roark has worked for Cameron for three years.Cameron says to Roark, âWell, have I taught you anything? Iâll tell you: Iâve taught you a great deal and nothing. No one can teach you anything, not at the core, at the source of it. What youâre doing â" itâs yours, not mine. I can only teach you to do it better. I can give you the means, but the aim â" th e aimâs your own.âWhatâs your purpose? You can learn technical skills, and you can gain a lofty title, and you can get a big paycheck. Other people can give you those things. However, no one can instill a sense of purpose within you. Only you can figure that out. A clear sense of a compelling purpose is what separates an ordinary career from an extraordinary one. What is your aim? What is the purpose of your career? Before you search for your next job, I suggest you take out a sheet of paper and start to answer these questions: Besides receiving a paycheck, why do I want to work? What difference do I want to make with my career? What am I particularly good at doing and how can I use those skills to fulfill my purpose for working? What am I particularly passionate about doing and how can I use this passion to fulfill my purpose at work? If youâve been out of school for any length of time, you might feel these are silly questions to ask. You might think, âDan, wouldnât it be better to find out what the companyâs retirement plan looks like or how soon Iâll be promoted or what personality type my potential new boss has?â I donât think so. If you donât start with a sense of purpose, you will quickly find yourself in a daily activity devoid of personal meaning. At best, this turns into a gift of beautiful wrapping paper around an empty box. At worst, it turns into just an empty box.Almost exactly 20 years ago, I took a job purely for the money I was told would be there. Somehow I convinced myself that it would be worth it to have a lot of money. Every day, I got dressed up, hopped on the train and went to work. I was excited about buying a certain home and a certain car. I was the first one in and the last one out. Then one day something totally unexpected happened. I closed my office door and broke down crying. It took me three months to realize it, but I was doing something that had zero sense of purpose to me. I left. These are very tough economic times. Well-paying jobs are very hard to come by. The temptation to take a job that you have no passion for and that does not fit with your purpose is very strong. If you have to put food on the table, take it. But be very careful. Remember that a âgreat jobâ can lead to an ordinary career or worse.Every day, stay on the alert to find an opportunity to fulfill your purpose. When you find it, you are on your way to a successful job search.

10 Common (and Corrosive) Job Reference Mistakes
10 Common (and Corrosive) Job Reference Mistakes 10 Common (and Corrosive) Job Reference Mistakes In the job hunt, there is so much focus on the resume and the interview that your professional references don't get enough attention. But there are several mistakes that many job applicants make with their references that could easily be avoided.1. You've got "References Upon Request" on your resume. Employers and recruiters know they can get references from you at the appropriate time. It's a given. You're actually wasting valuable real estate on your resume when you do this, and you'd be better off filling that space with more job experience, skills, or education information.2. You send your list of references without being asked. It's not necessary to send your references to every potential employer. For one reason, you could inundate your references with calls, and they won't even be prepared by knowing what position you've applied for. Instead, focus on only giving references to employers who are serious about hiring you, and give your references a heads up to prepare for the ca ll.3. Your references aren't prepared. Piggybacking on No. 2, it's important to have your references know a little about the position you've applied for so they can discuss your most relevant skills and provide you with the strongest possible reference. Applying for a variety of positions without letting your references know is equivalent to throwing both them and yourself under the bus.4. Your references can't speak to your job experience. When you're young, you may not have that many people who can give a recommendation on your professional experience, but resist filling the list with your friends and family. Instead, look to past college professors, internship or volunteer coordinators, or mentors to talk you up. If you have relevant job experience, your most recent employers and colleagues will be your strongest reference. Typically, the more recent the reference, the better. References tend to forget many of the specifics of working with you over time.5. You haven't asked your references for permission. If you list former bosses on your reference list and they are unaware of it, you risk them being taken by surprise, and even possibly giving a shaky recommendation. Always ask for permission to use someone as a reference, and give them as much information about the jobs you're applying for as possible.6. You list bad references. Make sure you'd get a good recommendation from anyone you put on your reference list. Some employers will not formally give any more information other than dates of employment and information on your eligibility for rehire. If the answer is no, you've lost your chance at the new job.7. Your contacts are outdated. Before providing your references, you should make sure all the contact information is updated, so that you don't waste the time of potential employers. You don't want to hold up the reference-checking process because you can no longer locate one of your references. Checking in periodically is a good way to stay in touch an d reconnect as well.8. Your references are old. If you use a boss from 10 years ago as a reference, potential employers might scratch their heads and wonder why you don't have anyone more recent who can vouch for you. If you do use an old boss or mentor, make sure it's someone you still stay in touch with and you have more recent references to send along.9. Your reference list is long (or short). No employer is going to call a lengthy list of contacts, so unless you're asked differently, aim for three to five people- and ask what types of references the employer wants. Some employers only want to talk to previous bosses where others may want to hear from a client as well as a boss and a junior colleague.10. You didn't bring your references to your interview. Always be prepared and bring extra copies of your resume as well as your reference list to the interview. Better to have it and not need it than to be caught empty-handed.Lindsay Olson is a founding partner and public relations recruiter with Paradigm Staffing and Hoojobs.com, a niche job board for public relations, communications, and social media jobs. SAP Promises Employees Become Everything You Want Heres How They Deliver
SAP Promises Employees âBecome Everything You Wantâ â" Hereâs How They Deliver SAP Promises Employees âBecome Everything You Wantâ - Hereâs How They Deliver 8 Characteristics Great Managers Look for in College Grads âCandidates and employees can afford to be choosier than in the past,â says Stefan Ries, Chief Human Resources Officer of SAP . â[This] means employers must learn how to market their open positions in ways that resonate with what todayâs jobseekers are looking for.â In other words, candidates and employees are in the driversâ seat. With the job market favoring job seekers, companies are doubling down on company culture and employee engagement to attract and retain top talent. However, SAP is in a class of its own. The enterprise application software company has set a mission of helping companies of all sizes and industries run better, and for its employees, SAP is laser-focused on supporting, challenging and inspiring every day. Itâs no wonder SAP was named a Best Place to Work by Glassdoor in 2018 . With a 4.4 company rating, SAP has an enviable company culture that 92% of employees would recommend to a friend. CEO Bill McDermott has a 97% approval rating on Glassdoor, and reading reviews of the company is an exercise in professional FOMO for those of us who donât work for the German-based company. âThe company has also invested in continuous learning, mentoring, development opportunities and flexible working hours,â says Ries, revealing a bit of SAPâs âsecret sauceâ. âBy listening and keeping a close eye on our culture, career opportunities, management, and compensation & benefits, we can give back to employees to ensure they are in a healthy environment with inspirational leaders, room for growth, and reward them appropriately. Glassdoor is a critical tool to help us do that.â On the heels of SAPâs Best Places to Work win , we caught up with SAP to dig into what makes their company tick and why it could be the home of your dream job. Glassdoor: Congratulations on winning the Best Places to Work award this year! How does it feel for you to know that your employees love working for SAP? Stefan Ries: Thank you, it feels great. Itâs an incredible achievement that SAP is one of only two employers to receive all five Glassdoor âBest Places to Workâ awards. This award is a strong endorsement of our efforts to provide a consistent and meaningful employee experience across the globe. Seeing this kind of a result is a powerful statement and affirmation that our employees love working at SAP. Glassdoor: What do you do to foster employee trust and engagement for a global company with employees spanning many countries and cities? Stefan Ries: At SAP, we understand how important it is to let employees voice their opinions and feedback. Transparency and trust are deeply anchored in our company culture. We strive to ensure that our employees are aware of the many open communication channels including through Glassdoor & our âLife at SAPâ social media channels, all-hands meetings, annual People Surveys, coffee corner sessions with senior leadership, virtual collaboration & discussion spaces, and more. These channels and tools are available to ensure we foster dialogue among and beyond individual teams, leaders â" as well as to ensure we give our people platforms to express their concerns, share their ideas and discuss their questions with leaders. We also have internal departments focused specifically on helping our employees and leaders succeed in their roles and build their careers â" particularly Mentoring Programs, Learning & Career Development programs, Business Network Groups, Success Counseling Centers at our offices, and more. Glassdoor: Is there one stand-out thing you and your team did in 2017 to help build a great company culture? Stefan Ries: Itâs hard to break it down to one single aspect. Employee trust and engagement do not come overnight. This is the result of many efforts over years â" and the journey continues each new day. We canât take trust for granted. And it must come from both sides: the top leaders and our employees. If I have to narrow it down to one thing that we have developed over the past years, I would say itâs that SAP runs with purpose. At SAP, we have a vision: we are committed to helping every customer become a best-run business. Now more than ever, being the best means making a difference. It means connecting people and information to address the worldâs biggest challenges. This is what we do. Thatâs why we engineer solutions to fuel innovation, foster equality, and spread opportunity across borders and cultures. Every time our customers turn their ideas into action, we help improve peopleâs lives. Together, we can transform industries, grow economies, lift up societies and sustain our environment. Glassdoor: Your employees love working here as we see the strong rating on Glassdoor. How do you make this a great place to work day in and day out? Stefan Ries: Candidates and employees can afford to be choosier than in the past, which means employers must learn how to market their open positions in ways that resonate with what todayâs jobseekers are looking for. Our employee value proposition (EVP) âBring Everything You Are, Become Everything You Want,â is designed specifically to appeal to the desire among todayâs candidates to get a genuine sense of what itâs like to work at a company. The campaign includes video testimonials from a diverse group of SAP employees explaining what drew them to the company and what keeps them here. The best way to communicate our EVP is to have employees speak on our behalf in their authentic voice. As such, our employees provide tangible examples of how SAP fosters a culture of openness, encouragement, and innovation, and how we challenge and inspire each other. The company has also invested in continuous learning, mentoring, development opportunities and flexible working hours. By listening and keeping a close eye on our culture, career opportunities, management, and compensation & benefits, we can give back to employees to ensure they are in a healthy environment with inspirational leaders, room for growth, and reward them appropriately. Glassdoor is a critical tool to help us do that. Glassdoor: Good leadership is not just one person. How do you work w/ your management teams to make sure employees have great leadership here? Stefan Ries: Leadership performance and development are important topics for us at SAP. We look for leaders who embody the SAP leadership principles: drive simplicity, ensure customer success and develop amazing talent. Throughout the year, we encourage our leaders to engage in their personal development plans. To help our leaders execute successfully in their roles, we invest a lot in learning. Some years ago we have built leadership training curricula for each level that are mandatory for all managers. Ultimately, at SAP, we have a culture that embodies transparency and open dialogue between colleagues of all professional levels to build a firm environment of mutual trust and respect. Additionally, we have many unique programs to foster our employeesâ development, such as the Women Leadership Excellence Acceleration Program (LEAP) , which is designed to maximize the unique value women bring to the workplace. LEAP addresses the specific leadership development needs of females and equips participants with the right skills, knowledge and leadership behaviors. Thanks to programs we have like LEAP, we have a stronger pipeline of leaders that are more prepared to take on business challenges and be role models to up and coming leaders. Glassdoor: What is the best part about working here? Stefan Ries: The people. Itâs not cliché. I truly believe SAPâs people are a diverse group who bring their own experiences and ideas to the table. They create this exciting work environment and together they can succeed in anything. We are innovators and we strive to help the work run better and improve peopleâs lives. Glassdoor: What do you look for in informed candidates? Stefan Ries: Since our people are our greatest assets and the source of SAPâs innovation and continued success we choose them carefully and hope to attract the right ones. We are always on the lookout for people with diverse personal and professional backgrounds who are true team players and think outside-of-the-box. We look for passionate, authentic and genuine individuals who are in turn looking for a place they can come to help make an impact. See our latest campaign âBring Everything You Are. Become Everything You Wantâ or âBusiness Beyond Biasâ. These campaigns features SAP employees who have achieved great things in their personal and professional lives and who have special pride in SAP. Reading these colleaguesâ stories is something that personally motivates me. We hope that by featuring our own employees and their stories, we can inspire others to join our SAP family as well. Glassdoor: How do you recruit talent? What are some of your best practices? Stefan Ries: We realized if we want to attract the right talent, we have to be pro-active and be where our talent is. We are very active on social media, partner with key universities, and local schools to build relationships and expand our networks. This includes programs such as the University Alliances or our SAP Student Entrepreneurship Program . We have also developed unique applications like our virtual âGet Homeâ game and âPerfect Matchâ Facebook app , which help us identify potential fits at SAP. These provide instant personality profiles and match roles for the candidates. We also provide an immediate, 3-page feedback report for candidates, which go to the hiring manager with suggested interview questions and training plans for new hires so everyone is fully prepared and knowledgeable of what to expect. Moreover, we have developed a âRecruiter Playbookâ for those HR teams that are hiring. This is our âhow toâ guide to recruitment at SAP. The playbook includes data points, facts, and figures but also includes personal stories and insights into our history, culture, strategy, and getting to know what it is like to work here. This ensures our recruiters are one of the first-line ambassadors to the company and ready to answer any company questions the candidates may have. Finally, our candidates can check out our award-winning careers website, browsing through the many content areas to make sure SAP is the right fit. The candidate can also very quickly join our Talent Community, even before starting any sort of interview process, ensuring they get the information they need via regular updates straight from the source. Once a candidate lands an interview, we provide them with our unique âBrand Insightsâ digital flipbook. This document helps outline SAPâs culture, history, purpose but even more importantly highlights the employee and customer stories that have had a huge impact. Glassdoor: How do you keep top talent at SAP? Stefan Ries: It is a priority for us at SAP to foster a work culture that makes everyone feel valued, empowered, and trusted. By focusing on these criteria, coupled with our âHow We Runâ behaviors, we aim to maintain a work environment that is comfortable for everyone. âHow We Runâ was developed from employees for employees â" and these behaviors are the basis for how we operate and work with each other â" and our customers: In addition, our formal onboarding processes assigns each new employee a âbuddyâ to assist with the transitions for new hires. And we continuously invest into learning. In 2017, the learning budget was 185 Mio. Euros (2016: 140 Mio. Euros). Glassdoor: For many job seekers, their decision on where to work comes down to the benefits. What are some of the coolest or most unique perks and benefits you offer? Stefan Ries: One of the coolest and most unique benefits SAP offers to its employees is the award-winning Own SAP equity plan. Own SAP enables employees to purchase company shares with a generous employer contribution and low investment risk. On top of their own investment, participants benefit from a 40% matching contribution and an additional â¬20 per month (for non-executives).
